It’s Here: Strava Integration with SmartHalo!

We’ve been cooking up this one for a little while now and we are excited to share it with you.

Introducing Strava Integration!

You spoke and we listened. Users with a Strava account will now have the ability to send ride data from SmartHalo to Strava. This is the first step to integrating the SmartHalo app with Strava, so look for continuous improvements to the Strava integration.

If you do not have a Strava account you can set one up if you wish to track & share every aspect of your cycling activity in a whole new way. Strava is a leading fitness app that creates a community for those looking to visualize their daily physical activity.

SmartHalo makes Strava even better because it tracks all your rides automatically via the fitness feature, unlike with the Strava app alone. You don’t need to think about it, just ride! This makes it easy to share your biking life with your Strava community (but only if you want to!).

How to link your Strava account

First, you’ll need to make sure you download the latest version of the SmartHalo app in the App Store or the Google Play Store (some phones will update apps automatically).

  1. Open the SmartHalo app and click on the profile icon (top left).
  2. Go to the “linked accounts” section in the left tab.
  3. Click on the Strava item.
  4. Click on “Connect to Strava”.
  5. Follow the instruction on the browser window that pops up.
  6. A pop-up notification will appear saying that you have successfully connected to Strava.
  7. The app will navigate to the Strava settings page.
  8. You can change your privacy policy settings in the Strava app if you desire.
  9. You will now be able to see your rides in Strava! Don’t forget to share the rides with friends!

New App Update Fitness: Delete rides

With over 1,057,589 trips logged by our SmartHalo community to date, we felt it was time to give you more control over your rides. This feature release will do just that!

Visualize Individual Rides

In the Fitness tab, you can now see your individual rides per day compared to before when you could only see a cumulative of the rides that you completed that day.

Delete Individual Rides

As part of that change you will also be able to delete individual rides that you may not want to include in your stats.

This gives you more control and a better overview of the metrics that matter to you and the individual rides that you take.

How do I use these new features?

First, you’ll need to make sure you download the latest version of the app in the “App Store” or “Google Play Store” (some phones will update apps automatically).

Second, go into the Fitness tab of the SmartHalo app and select “Past”. You can now see the number of rides you made that day. Select a specific date to see your individual rides that day.

Lastly, deleting rides will depend on your device OS

  • iOS: Swipe left to delete the ride or tap the Edit button in the upper right corner which enables ride deletion by clicking the minus sign that appears.
  • Android: Tap the red X next to the ride you would like to delete.

New App Release: Bike Horn, Clock & Quick Touch

What time is it? It’s time for new SmartHalo features! This one’s good, we’ve got a bunch comin’ your way.

Speaking of time…

We just made it way easier to stay on schedule with a new “Clock” feature. Stop being late with the help of a clock you can display with a short tap on your SmartHalo. Gone are the days of pulling out your phone constantly to check the time.

SmartHalo integrated bike clock

Beep beep – Watch out! The Horn is finally here.

Yes, you heard that right. You now have a built in horn right at your fingertips. Simply long tap once on your SmartHalo to honk your way to a safer cycling experience.

Bike Bell

But that’s not all… Introducing Quick Touch.

Trigger actions (that could previously only be done through the app) directly through SmartHalo’s touch screen surface with Quick Touch. Want to navigate home? 3 short taps on SmartHalo and you’re good to go! Want to switch from Turn-by-turn to Compass navigation? Easy: 3 long taps. The brand new clock and horn features are also triggered with their own sequence.

Quick Touch Navigation

The best part? You can customize which tap combinations trigger each action. View and customize them within the Assistant tab.

SmartHalo Bike Assistant

To make sure these features are easy to use, we’ve also improved touch feedback: you’ll now hear a subtle sound when you tap and you’ll be able to view the touch sequence you’ve just input, even when connected.

How do I get these sweet new features?

Easy, just follow these 2 steps:

  1. Make sure you download the latest version of the app in the App or Google Play store (some phones will update apps automatically).
  2. Once that’s done, install the latest version of the firmware. You’ll need to be connected to SmartHalo to do it. Just tap on the top right icon (you’ll see a red notification dot appear on your SmartHalo icon) and tap on “New firmware update”. The update takes 5 minutes max!

We hope you enjoy these new features and improvements. Big thanks to everyone who has provided feedback: SmartHalo keeps getting better and better thanks to you. Stay tuned for more updates!

New App Release: Alternate Routes

When suggesting a path, SmartHalo always tries to find the route that strikes the best balance between safety, distance and speed. This being said, a single path can’t always be the best option, so today we are happy to announce Alternate Routes!

After updating to the latest version of the app, you will notice that when you search for a destination, you will now be given more than one option (unless there is only one logical path available). Not only can you tap directly on the path you prefer, but you can also open up the Alternate Paths menu up top to have a one-word description of each of those.

Want to make sure you’ll get to your date on time? Choose the fastest option that might make you bike more on faster streets. Feel like riding safely to your destination on mostly bike paths? Choose the safest option. Want to avoid hills to not break a sweat? Choose the flattest path. You can also choose the recommended path, which strikes a balance between all of those. The Alternate Paths menu will also indicate how much time each route takes. And once you select a path type, it’ll always default to that selection in the future.

We hope you like this update to the Navigation feature. A few of you have also asked for the addition of waypoints, we are working on that as well (plus other treats!). Stay tuned!

New app release: Navigation updates

Greetings from Montreal!

We have just released a new version of the SmartHalo app and we’re really excited to share with you various improvements we’ve made to a core part of the SmartHalo experience: Navigation.

Navigation, either to discover your city or to get around, is a huge part of how you use SmartHalo. The new improvements we are announcing today should make your experience even more enjoyable:

Better search

This one’s a game changer: we now use Google Search and it is a-MA-zing. Just try searching for anything you can think of. Odds are, you’ll now find it.

Google Maps Tiles and Points of Interests

We now use the beautiful Google Map tiles for our map display, which means you’ll feel right at home if you use Google Maps regularly (we know you do 🙃 ). When zooming in, you’ll now see that favorite restaurant of yours or that new bistro that just opened a few months ago. Simply tap on these places and SmartHalo will plot a course to that destination. Pretty neat, right?

Improved Directions

We now have an improved directions algorithm. We’re constantly improving it, but it should now provide much better paths than before. This being said, we know that there can’t always be one best path that fits every use case… so yes, we are working on providing alternative paths. Expect them in an upcoming release!

Better Favourites Management

New in iOS: you can now see your favorites on the map (and you can tap on them to plot a course). You can also delete them using the “+” menu in the navigation screen. Don’t worry if you’re an Android user, it’s been in your app for a while!

We truly hope you will enjoy this new release as much as we do.

As always, keep providing us with your precious feedback, as we are constantly working to improve SmartHalo. Remember, this started as a humble Kickstarter project, we know there is room for improvement. With your help, we believe we can become the best smart biking device there is!

SmartHalo Entering Apple Stores

Hi fellow cyclists,

We have a big announcement today: SmartHalo will be sold in Apple stores in North America.

What started out as an idea 3 years ago will now be sold in one of the most prestigious tech stores around the world. This is great for many reasons:

  • This is going to make the product even better. We are a feedback-driven company. As more and more cyclists get their hands on SmartHalo, we will gather more valuable insights on how we can continually improve the software and firmware that drives SmartHalo. We even received some precious tips from Apple on how to improve the experience.
  • This exposes SmartHalo to a whole new crowd. Lots of cyclists don’t know about SmartHalo yet. This will provide a new venue for those people to discover us as it will be sold in Apple stores and on Apple’s online store. In the end, if more people with more SmartHalo devices on their bikes can also convince more people to bike safer, we all win.
  • Apple has pretty high standards for the products it sells in its stores. Being considered as a device worthy of selling next to iPhones, iPads, MacBooks and Apple Watches is an honour we couldn’t be more proud of.

As we let that sink in, we want to take a moment to thank all of our Kickstarter backers and pre-order customers who have helped us turn our vision into a product thousands of people use to make their bike rides safer and more fun.

This adventure has led us to many new places since its modest beginnings. We have learned so much during this journey and have yet much to learn. Going from web sales to retail is a new milestone in SmartHalo’s history.

We’re happy to have you along for the ride.

New Feature: Compass mode

Right off the heels of last week’s App release that included Navigation and Bluetooth improvements, we’re happy to share another cool feature this week: Compass mode!

Compass mode is for when only the destination matters. Once active, SmartHalo simply points you towards your destination instead of giving precise turn-by-turn directions. How you get there is entirely up to you. As you get closer to your destination, the pointer progressively turns greener.

To turn compass mode on, simply tap on the gear icon in the navigation tab. Use that same menu to flip back to turn-by-turn. You can even switch mid-ride. We’ve already found some new paths we would’ve never had even taken otherwise using Compass mode. We hope this feature will help you rediscover your city as well!

Improved Fitness Tracking Start Mechanism

This release also includes a fitness tracking refinement. From now on, if you walk besides your bike, fitness tracking won’t track it; it only starts when you actually start riding fast enough. It’ll also filter out the end of your ride if you walk a few meters. No more low average speeds!

Make sure you have the latest release by updating your app to the latest version. Have a fun ride!
